Hidden Gems Of Hartford And Tolland Counties

MANCHESTER, CT — There's a one-sentence theme to this week's Hidden Gem and it is steeped in history ...

... George Washington stopped here.

Welcome to the Woodbridge Tavern, or at least where it used to be in Manchester.

The historic marker sits where Middle Turnpike East meets Woodbridge Street Ext. on a small patch of "green" near a gas station, a church and a pizza place bearing the same name as the tavern.

According to the Manchester Historical Society, the tavern hosted George Washington in 1781 and 1789. The historical society cites an entry in Washington's diary for Nov. 9, 1789 that reads, "Stopped at Woodbridge's, where the level land is entered upon ... the country is pleasant ..."

That same day, tavern keeper Deodat Woodbridge wrote in his diary, "President Washington praised the quality of my rum."

The old tavern was torn down in 1938.
