MANCHESTER, CT — The latest addition to the Manchester Fire Department fleet was officially put into service Thursday.

At about 4 p.m., Manchester Fire placed the apparatus into service. Truck 5 is now a Sutphen SPH-100 Tower Ladder and will be running out of Station 5 on Tolland Turnpike.

The acquisition of the lightly used truck was made at a "significant cost savings and a greatly accelerated timeframe," when compared to purchasing a brand new tower, fire officials said.

"Truck 5 operates with a crew of 4 as an ALS Ladder company, protecting the north side of town and providing Tower Ladder capabilities to all of Manchester," fire officials said.

The company's previous 2003 E-one Tower will be placed in reserve status, fire officials said.
