A 37-year old East Hartford man is facing a litany of charges, including home invasion and assault of a blind person, after an incident that occurred in Manchester involving his sister and brother-in-law.Â
According to sworn statements by the victims and several witnesses provided to the Manchester Police Department, Carlton Isaac Chandler, 37, of 200 Nutmeg Lane, East Hartford, went to his sister's house in the Spruce Street area of Manchester on April 1, 2013 and got into an argument with her. The sister told police that Chandler, who had just been released from prison several months earlier, arrived at her house looking drunk and high and demanded a cigarette. When she refused to give him one, she told police that he crushed her entire pack, screamed at her and left.Â
The woman then went to visit her husband, who lives at a separate residence nearby, to collect money for their daughter, and told police that Chandler followed her to that residence, screaming that her husband owed him money.Â
According to the statement's, Chandler forced his way into the home, began choking and hitting his sister when she tried to call the police - the sister also told police that she suffers from metastasized breast cancer - and then also assaulted her husband when he tried to intervene. The husband is legally blind, according to court documents, and Chandler's assault left him bleeding profusely and requiring nine stitches to his forehead. Carlton also tried to take money out of his brother-in-law's pocket, according to the statements.Â
Chandler was taken into custody later at his East Hartford residence and charged with home invasion, attempt to commit first-degree robbery, two counts of interfering with an emergency call, third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, second-degree breach of peace, second-degree unlawful restraint and assault of an elderly, blind, disabled, pregnant or mentally retarded person.Â
He is being held on $400,000 bond at the Hartford Correctional Center and is scheduled to appear in court on the charges May 2, 2013.Â
