UR Community Cares Hosting Special Program For Blind, Deaf Community

MANCHESTER, CT — UR Community Cares, a dedicated advocate for inclusion and accessibility, is hosting an event Thursday aimed at empowering the blind/deaf and deaf community.

This event is designed to highlight valuable resources regarding assistive technology while addressing essential fire safety and prevention strategies tailored for the population.

Thursday's event is slated for 10:30 a.m. to noon at the UR Community Tech Center, 153 Spruce St., in Manchester.

The event was made possible by grant funding received from the CVS Health Foundation.

Six professional interpreters will be present to offer tactile interpretation and American Sign Language, ensuring that all attendees receive vital information in an accessible manner.

"This commitment to inclusivity is critical as we strive to serve and support the needs of this fragile group of individuals," UR officials said.

The event will feature a presentation by Manchester’s Fire Inspector, Roger Thrall, who specializes in safety protocols for persons with disabilities. Attendees will learn about important fire safety practices, emergency preparedness, and prevention strategies that are particularly relevant to the deaf and blind community.

The Connecticut Tech Act Project team will be onsite to demonstrate some assistive technology to keep people with disabilities safe at home.

"This event represents our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, informed, and empowered community," said Michelle Puzzo, the executive director of UR Community Cares. "By highlighting assistive technology and offering practical safety knowledge, we aim to equip individuals with the tools they need to navigate their environments confidently."

In addition to the educational components, the event will provide opportunities for networking and resource sharing among participants. Attendees will also have access to various assistive technology demonstrations that can enhance communication and daily living.
