Man, Dog Rescued From House Fire In Meriden: Officials

A bystander ran into a house fire to try and save a dog, but couldn't find it and climbed out a window to an adjoining roof, officials said.

MERIDEN, CT — A man and a dog were rescued from a house fire Friday morning in Meriden, according to officials.

Crews responded around 11 a.m. to multiple calls for a house fire on Fairmount Street in Meriden, according to Deputy Fire Chief Cristina Schoeck.

Schoeck said the first-arriving crew found fire on the second floor of the house, and a person, who was trapped on the roof of the one-story addition of the house.

A second alarm was called, according to Schoeck.

“The occupant of the house was outside,” Schoeck wrote in a news release. “But a bystander ran into the house to try to save the dog. Unable to find the dog and unable to make it down the stairs to escape the burning home, this individual climbed out the window to the adjoining roof.

“Fortunately, firefighters rescued the man from the roof and the dog.”

Two people were evaluated by medical crews, according to Schoeck.

Schoeck said the dog was treated with oxygen and taken by family friends to a local veterinarian.

Mutual Aid companies, assisting with covering other calls for service, responded around 12:40 p.m. to a house filling up with smoke in the 100 block of Wall Street, according to Schoeck.

“Middletown Truck 1 was the first to arrive on scene and declared a working fire,” Schoeck wrote. “Wallingford Engine, Southington Engine and Meriden Engine 5 knocked down the fire quickly. The homeowner was safe out of the house and evaluated by Hartford Healthcare Ambulance.”

No injuries were reported at either fire, according to Schoeck.
