Meriden Officials Set Sunday Date for July Fireworks

Less than a week after fronting the $25,000 to keep the fireworks alive, the city has set a July 7 date for the display at Hubbard Park in Meriden.

Last week, members of the City Council appropriated $25,000 to assure that the tradition of providing a Fourth of July fireworks show would remain alive. Now an official date has been set.

Meriden officials have confirmed that the fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 7, at Hubbard Park. The event will include a concert beforehand with the fireworks display to boom the night sky at 9:15 p.m.

The City Council has made the decision to appropriate money for the display after Westfield-Meriden confirmed earlier this month that they would not be hosting the tradition in 2013. It marks the second straight year that the city has taken over organization and funding of the display.

“It’s such a tradition for Meriden in an iconic location over at Hubbard Park and people enjoy it,” Mayor Michael Rohde told the Record-Journal. “The money was available so the councilors just decided it would be a good idea.”

Westfield, the company that owns the Westfield-Meriden Mall, said the money previously used for the event would instead be used to promote further family and community-oriented programs.

In addition to the display this year, officials said the event will include a special musical performance from Memphis Soul Spectacular.
