Obituary: Charles L. Woronick, PhD, 93, Of Meriden

MERIDEN, CT — (From Meriden Memorial Funeral Home): Charles L. Woronick, PhD, 93, of Meriden, passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 22, 2024 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.

Charles was born in Meriden, December 4, 1930, a son of the late Peter and Pauline (Kajrys)Woronick and had been a lifelong Meriden resident.

Charles received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut in 1953, his Master of Science from the University of California in 1955 and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1959.

Dr. Woronick was awarded post-doctoral fellowships from both the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health for further training at the Nobel Medical Institute in Stockholm. He was the first to crystalize the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme from the human liver.

Dr. Woronick began his distinguished career as an assistant professor of chemistry at Brown University in 1962. Four years later, he transitioned out of academia, when he was hired by the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia as an associate non-clinician investigator and an associate in pathology. Following these appointments, Dr. Woronick began a long and successful career in 1968 with the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Serving for two and a half decades at the hospital as a biochemist, he continued as a research analyst for a year before retiring.

He is credited with authoring or coauthoring over 100 scientific papers and text chapters in scientific publications and was given a lifetime achievement award by Marquis Who’s Who in 2020.

Charles is survived by his brother Thomas Woronick and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters Tony, Walter, Edward, Peter, and Margaret Woronick, Phyllis Jacob, Gertrude Molinari, Albina Drechsler, Virginia Howard, Sally Zemke, Florence McGivern, Rose Clark, and Anna Faltnoski.

His family received relatives and friends at the Meriden Memorial Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., o Saturday, March 2, 2024.
