Pedestrian Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Driver: Meriden Police

A 17-year-old driver failed to notice the pedestrian in their path, knocking her to the ground and running her over, according to police.

MERIDEN, CT — A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a driver while in a crosswalk Thursday afternoon in Meriden, according to police.

Police responded around 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 9 to a report of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of East Main Street and Swain Avenue.

Arriving officers found a 62-year-old woman lying on her back in the road with “obvious injuries to her head and lower extremities,” according to police.

Police said the initial investigation determined that the woman had been walking westbound across Swain Avenue in the crosswalk.

“The walk signal was not active,” police wrote in a news release. “A 17-year-old male driver was stopped at a red light on Swain Ave. waiting to turn right onto E. Main St. The pedestrian was directly in front of his Kia Sorento when he accelerated to complete the right turn. He failed to notice the pedestrian in his path and struck her with his vehicle, knocking her to the ground and running her over.”

The victim was treated at the scene by Meriden Fire, Hunters EMS, Meriden patrol officers, and a good Samaritan, according to police.

She was taken to an area trauma center with injuries that police said were later deemed to be serious but not life-threatening.

No other injuries were reported, and police said all parties are cooperating with the investigation.
