MERIDEN, CT — Officials are advising motorists of a water main break that is slowing traffic in the Perkins Square area in Meriden.

The water main break on Perkins at South Colony Street was first reported around 7 a.m. Friday, and has “become a very time consuming repair as a section of the pipe blew out,” officials wrote in a post on the City of Meriden’s Facebook page.

“As a result, traffic on Hanover St., heading toward downtown, is being detoured away from the railroad tracks, which is causing delays,” the post reads. “Please avoid the area as the water department works diligently to try to make this repair.”

In an update around 8:30 p.m., officials said Meriden Water Division crews were able to shut down the water and have begun making the repair.

"If you experience a discoloration in your water, the Water Division recommends flushing cold water through a tub or a work/slop sink for 15-20 minutes," officials wrote. "A faucet without filters or one that swivels is best. Repeat the process, if necessary."
