MIDDLETOWN, CT — Around 2,200 homes were without power as of Friday afternoon, Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim said in an update.

“With Eversource line crews finally out in meaningful numbers in Middletown, we are down to ‘just’ 2,200 outages from our peak of around 9,000,” Florsheim wrote in a post on Facebook. “I'm hopeful that those numbers will continue to drop between now and tonight-- I want my power back over the weekend and I know you do too.

“That being said, we still have a good number of wires in trees (and trees in wires) that need to be dealt with. Middletown Public Works is ready to roll as soon as Eversource has crews on site, but the city can't touch those trees until they're able to deal with the wires. Please continue to report outages at eversource.com or by texting 231-29.

“Middletown High School is open until 8:00 pm tonight, and 8a-8p over the weekend, for charging devices and storing medicine that requires refrigeration.

“As always, we owe debts of gratitude to our first responders: Middletown Police Department -Connecticut, City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073, South Fire District Firefighters IAFF Local 3918, Westfield Fire Dept, Public Works, Emergency Management, and everyone in and out of city government who has been working hard to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

“I want to also give a HUGE shoutout to the City's Information Systems (IT) department, who worked with Emergency Management to get a generator to Middlesex Community College. MxCC houses networking equipment that provides service not just to Middletown City Hall, but also Russell Library and two dozen other town halls and libraries throughout central Connecticut. By working quickly and collaboratively with MxCC, our team was able to get services back up in running in ALL of those towns in a matter of hours. Not trying to brag... but if Eversource, Comcast, or Frontier are reading, this is how you get things done!”
