Gas Tanker Fire Quickly Extinguished In 4-Vehicle Highway Crash In Middletown
Multiple people were taken to hospitals after a crash in Middletown Wednesday night.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Westfield Fire Department crews were able to make quick work of a potentially hazardous situation after a four-vehicle crash Wednesday night on Interstate 91 in Middletown that included a truck carrying gasoline.
The crash took place just before 8 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway, just shy of Exit 20, Westfield Fire officials said.
When crews arrived at the scene, they encountered mangled vehicles with one person trapped and the passenger compartment of a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline ablaze, fire officials said.

The truck fire was quickly extinguished and the trailer "was not compromised," fire officials said. There was no gas leak at the scene, fire officials said.
The trapped driver was then extricated, fire officials said. Multiple people were transported to area hospitals, fire officials said.

I-91 northbound was closed until about 9:30 p.m. while wreckers removed all the vehicles involved in the crash.
