Middletown Cops Staging 'Blue Envelope' Practice Traffic Stop
Middletown police offer sessions to assist autistic drivers and passengers with what to expect during a traffic stop.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — Middletown police will be staging a practice traffic stop this month aimed at assisting those with autism.
Registration is open for the next interaction session, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Middletown High School. The free events are offered periodically and are open to any autistic person who would like to interact with police and learn how to utilize the blue envelope during a traffic stop, as a passenger or driver.
The Blue Envelope was created to enhance communication between a police officer and a driver with autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of the envelope is to give the driver one place to hold his or her insurance card, registration and driver's license, thus making it easier to hand everything to an officer during a traffic stop.

Posted on the outside of the envelope are helpful tips and instructions for both the officer and driver on how to successfully communicate with each other.
