Middletown’s First Diwali Proclamation Presented

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The city of Middletown’s first Diwali proclamation was presented on Friday.

Mayor Ben Florsheim had the honors during a cultural event on the front lawn of City Hall highlighting the significance of Diwali.

Diwali is a celebration of light over darkness, good over evil, and education over ignorance. Diwali is a Hindu religious holiday and one of India's largest and most historically celebrated holidays. The holiday includes a five-day Festival of Lights held between October and November. Traditionally people exchange gifts and celebrate hope for the New Year.

Earlier this year, a team of volunteers spearheading an effort to designate Diwali as a State of Connecticut and/or National Holiday in 2025 reached out to local municipalities for proclamations recognizing the holiday. Rajeev Pahuja, who is part of the team raising awareness about Diwali throughout Connecticut, said, "Celebrate Diwali Day 2024 filled with joy, prosperity, and endless blessings."

Maria Scarlett, the recruitment and outreach specialist for the city of Middletown, said "May the lights of Diwali brighten your path and illuminate your life with peace. Happy Diwali to all who are celebrating."

Said Florsheim, "It is an honor to present this Diwali proclamation, and we are excited to make this an annual occasion in Middletown. Many members of the Hindu faith reside in our community, and Middletown is proudly home to the Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Temple, located on Training Hill Road and frequented by Hindus and others from across our state and beyond. The city of Middletown continues to strive to be an inclusive and welcoming community, and it is important we recognize holidays and cultural traditions that are celebrated by city residents of all backgrounds and faiths. Diwali recognizes the triumph of goodness, and we can all appreciate that. To all who celebrate, happy Diwali."
