Middletown Animal Control officers told WFSB that the atypical hoarding situation began at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020 when a good Samaritan rescued four pregnant cats off the street.

The rescuer was caught off-guard by the effect of the pandemic on veterinary resources, and the number of cats eventually increased to 60, according to WFSB 3.
