Mary, known as a social butterfly, was a member of the American Legion Post 206 Women's Auxiliary and the Cross Street AME Zion Church.
MIDDLETOWN, CT - (From Doolittle Funeral Home) Mary Helen (Greenway) Campbell, 90, of Middletown. Mary was born in Emporia, Virginia on February 22, 1932, to Ida P. Greenway-Jackson and Lee Roy Mayes. She was married to Alexander Augustus Campbell who predeceased her in 1963.
Mary was an extremely active member of Cross Street AME Zion Church in Middletown, CT. Her Pastor, Moses Harvill and other Cross Street members often referred to her as a “social butterfly”.
She was also an active member of the American Legion Post 206 Women’s Auxiliary in Middletown, CT.
A life-long Democrat, Mary often loved working and talking with local political officials.
Over several decades, Mary was a diligent and hard-working single mother, raising three children. She worked numerous tough jobs including the hot tobacco fields of Consolidated Cigar Corp (CCC) in Portland, CT and Middletown Wire and Cable in Middletown, CT.
She earned her retirement from her final job as a machine operator for Monsanto Chemical Company in Deep River, CT. Mary’s most rewarding employment was running her own Day Care Center from her home on 53 Silver St, Middletown, CT.
She also enjoyed taking care of Senior Citizens so that they remained in their homes and not the hospitals or nursing homes.
In retirement, she enjoyed traveling the country from coast-to-coast by plane, train, bus, and car to visit her family and friends. Mary was always ready for a trip to a casino with her friends like Jackie Johnson, Annie Yopp and Katherine Bond.
She was in constant contact with her phone buddy Rosa Lee Johnson.
She watched sporting events and loved the New England Patriots, but she said she was always for the team that won!
Mary was predeceased by her mother, Ida P. Jackson and father, Lee Roy Mayes of Emporia, VA; brother, Harry Greenway of Washington, DC; daughter, Joaney L. Campbell of Middletown, CT; and granddaughter Cimberly A. Campbell-Leach of Waterbury, CT.
