RE:STOS - (Re:mains) Rosa Evangelina Beltrán in Concert | New Britain

Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra will present Mexican-American vocalist Rosa Evangelina Beltrán in a performance of selections inspired by Rosa’s poetry manuscript Re:stos (Re:mains).

Rosa Evangelina conveys through her work and performance a journey through immigration, intergenerational trauma, and liberation. Ms. Beltrán will perform alongside NYC-based vocalist and recording artist, Nora Fox. This concert also includes Alfonso de Elias’s ‘Five Pieces for Strings Orchestra’ and Silvestre Revueltas’s ‘Five Songs for Children’, arranged for violin and strings.

We The People is a concert series featuring immigrant composers and emphasizing works that showcase the diverse cultural patchwork of America. In this third installment, “We the People: Culture of Mexico”, the CT Virtuosi Orchestra performs selections that highlight Mexican classical pieces and folk tunes. The concert will be conducted by award-winning musician, Adrian Sylveen, artistic director of CT Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and CT Lyric Opera.

Meet the Artists

ROSA EVANGELINA BELTRÁN is a Mexican-American vocalist and poet born in Guadalajara, Mexico and based in Los Angeles, California. She recently performed with CalArts Opera Theater, Pacific Opera Project, Brown Fist Productions, and the Santa Monica College Opera Company. In addition to performing the roles of Xochiquetzal and Monarca in El Circo Anahuac (Reyes) in Los Angeles in 2022, recent highlights include performing a vocal rendition of The Soldier’s Tale (Stravinksy) with The Ensemble at CalArts and a vocal piece for the installation taracatá trabaja (Sarno/Krygier) at MASS MoCA. Her opera and operetta credits also include Kopernikus (Vivier), The Dream Maker (Haukoos), Die Zauberflöte, Gianni Schicchi, Carmen, Il Campanello, The Pirates of Penzance, and Utopia, Limited. Rosa holds MFA degrees in Voice and Creative Writing from the California Institute of the Arts and a BA in History and Literature from Harvard. She is a first generation college graduate and a passionate advocate for arts education and trauma-informed care. (Photo Kate C Maloney)

NORA FOX is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, writer, actor and choreographer from Stonington, CT. She began performing at the Garde Arts, Eugene O’Neill, Goodspeed, and on Broadway. Fox’s writing has been produced by NYU’s Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue directed by Anna Deavere Smith. She has written and performed in BARS theatre-in-verse workshop filmed at the Public Theater with Daveed Diggs, and has performed and led masterclasses in Belarus's International Festival of Dance, Brown University, and for Grammy-winning Mark O’Connor’s string camp. A proud member of Actors Equity, Fox has acted in/composed music for a film of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, collaborated with Jon Batiste, and taught at Brown, where she holds a degree in Literary Arts. She recently played Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Italy with Adrian Sylveen. Fox is excited to release her album with Brontosaurus Records. @Nora_Fox NoraFoxMusic.com

ADRIAN SYLVEEN (Conductor) enjoys a performing career in the United States and Europe. He serves as Artistic Director of the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Connecticut Lyric Opera, and the Classical Orchestra of Pila in Poland. An active soloist as well as conductor, he has performed concerts and recitals in Poland, Switzerland, Germany, former Soviet Union, and the United States. Sylveen graduated with distinction from the Paderewski Music Academy in Poznan, Poland, and holds Master and post-Master degrees from the Yale University School of Music. He is the recipient of prizes and awards from international competitions and has participated in several international festivals such as Weimar and Lancut. Maestro Sylveen has received several prestigious scholarships and awards, including the “Primus Inter Pares” Award given by the President of the Republic of Poland.
