Indie Bookstore Celebrates Opening In Downtown Milford
The owner, a Milford resident, wanted to bring an independent bookshop back to downtown.

MILFORD, CT — Mermaid Books is open for business at Harbor Walk in downtown.
Owner Kristen Mascia has dreamed of opening a bookstore for more than two decades. After years of envisioning the perfect space, she began researching locations over two years ago, eventually finding a spot at 22 Broad St., according to a statement from the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Mascia signed the lease in February, and by June, Mermaid Books officially opened its doors to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the store was held Tuesday with Mayor Tony Giannattasio, local officials, and community members.

Mascia has lived in Milford for four years. She and her family were inspired to create a welcoming space for local readers after realizing the city didn’t have a dedicated bookstore.
Her goal was to create "a space that fosters community and a welcoming place where readers can come together and share their love of books," according to the statement.
