Milford Aiming To Replace Former Simon Lake School Roof In Spring

The total cost of the project is a little less than $700,000, but the city will apply for a $500,000 state reimbursement.

A Connecticut grant should cover the majority of the project's costs.

MILFORD, CT — The city is aiming to replace the roof at the former Simon Lake school, which is currently being used by the police department, board of education and Boys and Girls Club.

Estimates are that the project will cost slightly less than $700,000, but the city is applying for a $500,000 reimbursement grant through the state Small Town Economic Assistance Program, Mayor Ben Blake said at Monday’s Board of Aldermen meeting. Construction should begin in the springtime.

The board of education uses the space for storage and police use it to host the academy and tactical training, Blake said. The Boys and Girls Club will eventually move into space at the former Saint Gabriel’s School property on Tudor Road, but that building must first be renovated.

“In any case, it's a public asset, it needs a new roof,” Blake said. “It's on our capital improvement plan.”

Space used by the Boys and Girls Club will likely go to the police and board of education.

City officials are still working on the best way to fund the project, but it will likely be through bonding, Blake said.
