Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued As Strong Storm Moves In On Southern Connecticut

More snow returns to the forecast, and here is a first look at the Christmas Day weather forecast for southern Connecticut.

A strong frontal system will bring a period of heavy rain, strong to locally damaging winds and minor to moderate coastal impacts to southern Connecticut late Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

A wind advisory is in effect from midnight through midnight Friday for southern Connecticut. "Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected. Isolated wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible Friday morning."

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for coastal sections of southern Connecticut up until 1 p.m. Friday.

"Minor flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Expect up to 1 1/2 ft of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding," the weather service said in a statement.

Up to two inches of rain is forecast and rainfall rates up to three-quarters of an inch an hour is possible Friday morning into early afternoon, the weather service said.

The precipitation begins before daybreak Friday and ends in the late afternoon.


Here are the extended forecast details for southern Connecticut via the National Weather Service:

Tonight: Rain, mainly after 4am. Temperature rising to around 50 by 4am. Southeast wind 5 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of rain between 1pm and 4pm. Temperature rising to near 55 by 10am, then falling to around 44 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a south wind 17 to 24 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 26. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. West wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. West wind 8 to 10 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 36. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 46.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 34.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Tuesday: A chance of snow before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
