Car Fire, Fire At Grillo's Extinguished By Milford FD Over The Weekend

Milford Fire Department had to use foam on the car and used over 30 thousand gallons of water to extinguish the fire at Grillo Services.

MILFORD, CT – It was a busy weekend for the Milford Fire Department as they responded to two fires over the Labor Day weekend.

On Saturday, around 3:39 a.m., the Milford Emergency Operations Center (EOC) received a 911 call for a report of a vehicle on fire on Route 15 North Bound, Adam Hansen, Milford Fire Department PIO, said.

When fire personnel arrived, they found a two-motor vehicle accident, and the vehicles were about 25 feet off the road, with one car fully involved in fire, Hansen said.

Milford companies worked together with the Orange Fire Department to extinguish the fire, Hansen said.

The foam had to be utilized to extinguish fuel from a gas tank that had ruptured, Hansen said.

All occupants made it out safely, and no injuries were reported to fire department crews.

The following day, on Sunday, around 1:48 p.m., the EOC received several 911 calls stating there was a large amount of smoke coming from the property of Grillo Services at 1183 Oronoque Rd. Hansen said.

Engine No. 7, Engine No. 6, Ladder No. 3, No. 5 and Car No. 4 were dispatched and arrived to find multiple large mulch piles on Fire, Hansen said.

The amount of area involved with the fire was about the size/area of a football field, Hansen said.

Fire personnel worked for the majority of the afternoon containing and extinguishing the fire, Hansen said.

Tanker No. 58 and C No. 1 responded from Shelton to assist after incident command called for/requested a tanker truck from Shelton, Hansen said.

Medic No. 3 was called for rehabilitation, considering the heat index, the duration of the incident, and the manual workload involved, Hansen said.

Two separate excavators on the side needed to be utilized to move the debris and contents. The Canteen Truck (the Dinosaurs) was called for hydration and food to give the firefighters enough nutrition while working on the lengthier incident, Hansen said.

Over 30 thousand gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire, and the incident was controlled around 5:49 p.m. With crews working for four hours straight, Hanen said.
