Milford Kayaker Rescued Near Charles Island

Man, 47, could not get back into his kayak after it overturned, police said.

A kayaker was rescued near Charles Island Wednesday after his kayak overturned following a launch from Gulf Beach, police said.

Police said the 47-year-old male, who was not wearing a life jacket, told them a wave caused his kayak to flip.

The complaint of a boater in distress came in at 5:41 p.m., police said.

The Milford Police Department’s Marine Unit discovered the distressed boater clinging to his kayak in the waters near Charles Island, unable to climb back in, police said.

The male was reportedly shaking and complaining of leg cramps. The water was about 63 degrees, according to police.

Marine unit members of the city’s fire department evaluated the kayaker and transported him to a local hospital for further treatment, police said.

Police would like to remind boaters of the following safety precautions:

  • Consider your skill level prior to going out.
  • Wear a lifejacket.
  • Wear proper clothing that will assist in floatation and keeping you warm.
  • Have the proper equipment related to your activity.
  • Carry a whistle or other sounding device.
  • Consider weather and sea conditions prior to engaging in your activity.
  • Stay close to shore.
  • Always leave a float plan with someone ashore. Provide locations as well as departure and return times.
