Milford Public Schools Sees Increase In Kindergarten Enrollment

MILFORD, CT – For the fourth year in a row, there was an increase in elementary enrollment compared to what Milford Public Schools had projected, Dr. Anna Cutaia, superintendent of schools, said.
Cutaia presented the Oct. 1 enrollment report to the Milford Board of Education on Monday, Oct. 9.
“In 2021, we had 10 more students at the elementary school than projected. In 2021-22, we had 47 students than projected. In the 2022-23 school year, we had 32 more students than projected, and here we are in 2023-24 with 27 more elementary students than projected,” Cutaia said.

Milford Public Schools had 5,267 students enrolled in their schools as of Oct. 1.
“We were expecting 5,274 students,” Cutaia said.

The increase in elementary student enrollment was due to the fact there was more kindergarten enrollment than projected at four elementary schools in the district.
“At Calf Pen on Oct. 1, we have 50 kindergarten students, and we were projecting 38,” Cutaia said. “At Matthewson, we were expecting 52, but 60 kindergarteners enrolled. At Orange Avenue, we were expecting 64 kindergarteners, but we have 72 kindergarteners enrolled."
Cutaia said the biggest increase in kindergartener enrollment was at Orchard Hills. The expected number of kindergartners was 44, but as of Oct. 1, they have 65 kindergartners enrolled.
Calf Pen has 260 students, Mathewson has 324 students, Orange Avenue has 368, and Orchard Hills has 330 students.
“We expected 245 at Calf Pen, 316 students were expected at Mathewson, 350 were projected for Orange Avenue and at Orchard Hills, we were projecting 314 students,” Cutaia said. “In summary, At the elementary schools, we have 2,465, 27 more students than we were projecting.”
At the middle school level, there are 1,180, and at the high schools, 1,622 enrolled students.
“We were projecting 1,190 at the middle schools, which is 10 students fewer than projected, and we projected 1,646, which is 24 students fewer at the high school,” Cutaia said.
