5 Super Athletes With Ties To Monroe
Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to celebrate five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting impression on our community.

Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Monroe area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.
Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.
1. Mike Gminski (Basketball)
A standout in both college and professional basketball, Gminski began his journey at Masuk High School in Monroe, where he graduated early to start his collegiate career. At Duke University, he earned accolades as ACC Player of the Year (1979) and was named to multiple All-American teams while setting school records in points, rebounds and blocked shots. His jersey (#43) is retired by Duke, and he was honored as one of the ACC's 50 greatest players. Gminski went on to a 14-year NBA career, playing for teams like the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets.

2. Thomas Milone (Baseball)
Milone, a skilled outfielder, began his baseball journey in Monroe, where he developed the foundation for his professional career. Drafted in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013, he demonstrated his talent and versatility across multiple teams, including the New York Yankees. Milone is known for his defensive agility and commitment to the sport.
3. Juliana Pagano (Lacrosse)
Pagano, a standout lacrosse player from Monroe, was a driving force behind the success of Masuk High School's girls' lacrosse team during her time there. A two-time captain and All-State athlete, Pagano was celebrated for her leadership and ability to inspire her teammates in crucial moments. Beyond her impressive on-field contributions, including goals scored and turnovers caused, she extended her passion for sports by coaching young girls in cheerleading.

4. Kathryn Gallant (Softball)
Gallant left an indelible mark on Masuk High School's softball program with her exceptional talent and leadership. As a junior, she led the Panthers with a .532 batting average, 273 strikeouts and a perfect 21-0 pitching record, culminating in a complete game shutout and a two-run homer to secure the Class L State Championship. In her career, Gallant helped Masuk achieve a remarkable 50-1 record, earning two SWC and State titles despite the interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.
5. Steve Zazuri (Basketball)
A skilled basketball player from Monroe, Zazuri made a name for himself as a standout athlete at Masuk High School. Serving as team captain, Zazuri earned All-State honors and was named MVP twice, finishing his high school career with over 1,000 points, including two remarkable 49-point games in his senior year. Continuing his basketball journey at the collegiate level, he excelled as a point guard, contributing with his playmaking, defense and leadership on the court.
