Officers responded to a call about the driver of a small, blue sedan, slumped over the wheel, at a stop sign on Hammertown Road, near Josie's Ring Road, at 11:56 Saturday night. Officers found the driver of the Saturn Ion asleep with his foot on the brake and the gear shifted into drive, according to the report.
Police said an officer moved his car in front of the Saturn in case it rolled forward, while other officers were unable to wake up the driver by rapping on the window, adding a lockout tool had to be used to open the driver's side door.
When officers tried to stir the driver, Christopher Girotto, 22, of Forestview Drive in Sandy Hook, police said he kept asking them to "stop it" and to leave him alone, swatting their hands away.
Police said Girotto denied consuming alcohol or taking any medications, but had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. He was staggering and unable to perform field sobriety tests at the scene and later blew a .166 on a breath test at police headquarters — about twice the legal limit for blood alcohol levels, according to police.
At the scene, officers found less than a half an ounce of alcohol in Girotto's vehicle, leading to an infraction, police said. He was charged with DUI and released on $500 bond.
