Monroe Mourns Death Of Longtime EMS Chief

Monroe EMS Chief Don Smith​ has died after a courageous battle with cancer, the volunteer emergency medical service announced.

MONROE, CT — Monroe EMS Chief Don Smith has died, after a courageous battle with cancer, the volunteer emergency medical service announced on social media Tuesday.

Smith, 60, passed away at home with his family by his side, according to Monroe EMS. He had been chief of Monroe EMS for 12 years.

He also served with the Fairfield Police Department for 31 years, retiring in 2021 as deputy chief of police, according to Monroe EMS.

"Don played such a huge role in making Monroe EMS what it is today and he was passionate about providing excellent patient care and supporting the service and our members," Monroe EMS posted on Facebook.

"From caring for thousands of patients to his focus on community and EMS education and developing future first responders, he has a legacy that will live on in others."
