Monroe School Officials Propose Budget Increase: Report

School officials are beginning to mull the budget for next fiscal year. Once again, cuts to state aid loom large.

MONROE, CT — With the state's budget crisis in the rear-view mirror, Monroe's school officials proposed a budget with a slight increase for the upcoming 2018-2019 fiscal year, reports the Monroe Courier. During Monday Night's meeting of the Board of Education, Interim Superintendent and future Superintendent Jack Zamary proposed a budget 1.84 percent greater than the current year's budget.

The budget is proposed with further looming state cuts in mind, assuming the Education Cost Sharing grant total of $5,663,469 that was approved in the state's two-year budget. However, Board of Education Chairman Donna Lane said the board questioned if the town would receive that much.

The budget includes a 2.45 percent increase in salaries, a 4.11 percent in benefits. There was a 10.10 percent cut to special education and transportation.
