National Ice Cream Cone Day: What's Your Favorite Spot In Monroe?

Patch editors are asking their readers to tell us about their favorite go-to locations for a refreshing ice cream cone.

MONROE, CT — Autumn may officially arrive Saturday, but Sept. 22 marks National Ice Cream Cone Day in the United States, the last "holiday" of summertime.

Early versions of ice cream cones appeared in Europe during the 19th century, but on Sept. 22, 1903, an Italian immigrant living in New York City named Italo Marchiony applied for a patent – hence the commemorative date. The following year marked an explosion in the popularity of cones, thanks to their presence at the St. Louis World's Fair.

The three most popular types of cones are the flat-bottomed cake cone, the waffle cone and the sugar cone, which is similar to a cookie.
