Naugatuck Man Crashes Stolen Car Into Police Cruiser, Brick Wall: Waterbury PD

Police said a Naugatuck man is accused of crashing a stolen car into a police car and a brick wall while fleeing from officers in Waterbury.

WATERBURY, CT — A Naugatuck man accused of crashing a stolen car into a police vehicle and a brick wall while fleeing from officers was arrested Feb. 5 in Waterbury, according to police.

In a news release, Waterbury police said officers with the department's Auto Theft Task Force and Vice and Intelligence Unit, as well as the Connecticut Violent Crime Task Force, were patrolling the areas of Willow Street and Hillside Avenue when they spotted a 2007 Honda Accord parked in a lot on Hillside Avenue around 3:30 p.m.

According to police, the Honda was reported stolen from Bridgeport earlier that morning.

A driver and passenger in the vehicle were later identified as Daniel Baker, 42, of Naugatuck, and Janete Olivencia, 38, of Waterbury, according to police.

When officers attempted to stop the Honda, Baker tried to flee and crashed into both a police cruiser and a brick wall, police said.

Baker was taken to a local hospital due to a laceration to his face. Officers also seized drug paraphernalia after searching the vehicle, police said.

Baker was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, second-degree criminal trover, first-degree criminal mischief, illegal possession of a controlled substance, operation of motor vehicle with a suspended license and failure to keep narcotic medication in original container.

Police also noted Baker had an active warrant out of Fairfield at the time of his arrest.

Olivencia was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.
