Wolcott Man Tasered After Striking Waterbury Church Statue: PD

The incident happened early Wednesday morning, according to police.

WATERBURY, CT — A Wolcott resident is accused of striking a statue at a local church, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Police were summoned to the church, at 74 West Main St., at about 8:11 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a weapon, according to Officer Nyjah Porcher.

Officers arrived and saw a man, Kyran Atkinson, 23, of Wolcott, striking a statue, according to police.

Police said Atkinson refused to comply with officers’ commands, so police deployed a taser on him, then took him into custody.

Atkinson was charged with two counts of second-degree breach of peace, first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, and deprivation of rights.

Atkinson was held overnight on a $100,000 bond, and he is due to be arraigned in Superior Court in Waterbury today.
