A neglected home on God’s Acre is raising concerns among some advocates for the protection and preservation of New Canaan’s historic district.
The antique 2-story home at 4 Main St. dates to 1780 and is owned by James W Talbot, according to tax records. It’s on the market for $1,495,000, according to Zillow.
No one now is occupying the home, according to Terry Spring, a member of New Canaan’s Historic District Commission, and it’s showing signs of neglect at least to its exterior.
A phone number listed under Talbot’s name is not in service. Asked about the home, another member of the commission, Richard Rose, said “Hopefully it’s not ‘demolition by neglect.’ ”
The home last was sold in June 1984 for $365,000, tax records show and has been property of the Talbot family since then. In those 29 years, the home has seen one completed addition (in 1987), one partially finished addition (2006) and demolition of a garage (2009), records show. Its assessed value is $1,495,200.
