Four New Canaan Police Officers were honored Friday morning for their bravery and selflessness in the line of duty, three of whom received the Police Cross, a recognition now awarded in more than 20 years in town.
"I'm proud of the men and women in our department everyday," said Chief Leon Krolikowski. "They take risks every day protecting the public. But the actions of these men were exceptional, and there's no better act I can do as a police chief than give out these awards to these men."
Gulino, Humberg and O'Sullivan were recognized for their actions breaching a home engulfed in flames to search for a woman they believed to be home at the time. Sustaining smoke inhalation and other injuries, the officers refused to give up searching for the woman and continued to ventilate and scour the home until firefighters and additional backup arrived.
For their actions, they received the Police Cross award.
Officers Daniel Gulino, Scott Humburg, Michael O’Sullivan, Rex Sprosta were recognized for their actions while on the job for two separate incidents each featuring three of the officers in attendance.
Gulino, O'Sullivan and Sprosta were recognized for their actions in saving a suicidal male during a call where the victim reportedly pointed a knife at his own chest and threatened to take his life. That man is alive and receiving medical treatment because of the actions of the officers involved, including O'Sullivan and Gulino deploying tazers to subdue the man.
For their actions, they received the Medical Service Award.
"These officers overwhelmingly deserve this recognition," said Lt. David Ferris, who was the lieutenant on duty for both these incidents and recommended the officers for their awards.
