NEW HAVEN, CT —In January, New Haven police Special Victim Unit detectives began investigating a sexual assault case with a juvenile victim, police said. During the course of their investigation, they found that the suspect, Samuel Sumler, 34, of New Haven, was known to the victim for several years.
Over the course of several years, police said, he was found to have groomed the victim, ultimately sending money on several occasions as payment for sex via an app on his phone.
Investigators also found that Sumler was "paying the victim to find other juveniles for him, which led detectives to a second juvenile victim, who Sumler also attempted to groom," according to police.

He was taken into custody on Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. by officers Igor Glos and Matthew Natale, who were working the midnight shift and "proactively attempting to serve outstanding warrants."
Sumler was assigned $100,000 bond.

Also, Wednesday, officers responded to the pediatric area of the Yale New Haven Hospital for a sexual assault involving a juvenile, police said. The case was assigned to SVU detectives who were able to determine the incident occurred several days prior and the victim was familiar with the subject as they live in the same house, which has multiple units, police said.
Segundo Reinaldo Guaranda Gamboy, 32, "confessed to having sex with the victim," police said.
Gamboy was charged with first degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, police said, and was given a $500,000 bond.
"I would like to commend the officers and detectives who worked on these cases," said New Haven Chief of Police Karl Jacobson said. "The Special Victims Unit is assigned some of the most sensitive cases we investigate, often involving child victims, and through their efforts we were able to make arrests of these individuals."
