Four people were shot in downtown New Haven overnight in what police said was an "exchange of gunfire between two parties." One person has been arrested, and police are applying for a warrant for another person believed to be involved, the "second shooter," police said.

New Haven police spokesperson Christian Bruckhart shared an updated account of the overnight shootings that left four young people injured, one, a 19-year-old female from West Haven, critically.

By afternoon, New Haven police Chief Karl Jacobson said the young woman's condition "is life-threatening, she's in very critical condition."

The incident began at 2 a.m., police were alerted to several gunshots and a person shot in the 800 block of Chapel Street, police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckart said. The victim, a 22-year-old from Hamden, was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, officers en route to Chapel Street were flagged down and alerted to a second gunshot victim on Church Street by Center Street, Bruckhart said. Police found a 19-year-old female from West Haven with a gunshot wound who was unresponsive, he said. She was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital and remains in critical condition.

While on scene at Church Street, a 21-year-old male from Hamden, who was with the female was also found to have been shot, Bruckhart said. A fourth shooting victim, a 19-year-old from New Haven, later arrived at Yale-New Haven Hospital by private vehicle, police added.

The three males' injuries were all determined to be non-life-threatening, albeit one's condition was upgraded to critical, police said.

"Detectives were able to determine the incident primarily occurred on Church Street by Center Street and two of the victims fled the area following the gunshots," Bruckhart said. A gun was recovered on scene and ballistic evidence was located, he added.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department's anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).

Update at 2 p.m., NHPD news briefing:

"It's been four or five years since we've had a shooting downtown like this," Chief Jacobson said.

In a briefing at police headquarters, Jacobson noted that the incident was essentially a shootout between two "parties." In total, Jacobson said, 30 rounds had been fired, and that one "shooter" had a weapon with a high capacity magazine; a gun was recovered on the scene.

The chief said that additional officers will be downtown tonight, and likely going forward, "To make sure this doesn't happen again."
