NEW HAVEN, CT — In an announcement made at the State Capitol with Gov. Ned Lamont at its side, Avelo Airlines said it's adding Houston, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, and Traverse City, Michigan to its poster of nonstop destinations out of Tweed-New Haven Airport. The flights begin in June. The three new flights brings the total number of Avelo destinations to 24.

Avelo said it is the only airline that will offer nonstop service on Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft from Connecticut to the three new destinations and is the only airline in the state offering nonstop flights to the state of Missouri, it noted. And, said, it's the "only low-fare airline offering flights to the states of Texas and Michigan."

Houston is America’s fourth-largest city, St. Louis, home to the Gateway Arch and dubbed the gateway to the west, and Traverse City, on the Lake Michigan coast, is known as the Cherry Capital of the World.

Avelo also announced it will base a sixth aircraft at Tweed, noting the addition of a sixth aircraft "exemplifies Avelo’s continued growth in New Haven and the airline’s appeal to travelers from across Connecticut."

The airline said the additional plane will create around 35 more jobs at the airport.

New Haven Airport Authority Board chair Matt Hoey "applaud(ed) Avelo for their continued focus on Southern Connecticut flyers."

"The introduction of these new routes reflects our ongoing effort to meet the needs and preferences of our travelers," Hoey said. "By connecting Southern Connecticut to these key destinations, we’re opening new opportunities for business, leisure, and tourism."

Lamont said the airlines' announcement is welcome.

"It's good news for the region and our state because having a greater number of reliable transportation options mean more opportunities for businesses to strengthen their connectivity, increase our overall economic viability, and stimulate further regional development.”
