8 Injured In Partial Building Collapse In New Haven: Mayor

Fire crews have responded to a reported building collapse in New Haven on Friday afternoon.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Eight people were injured, including two critically, after a partial building collapse on Lafayette Street, top officials said Friday evening.

The New Haven Fire Department said it responded to a partial building collapse at 188 Lafayette Street at 12:38 p.m. The site is part of an ongoing seven-story apartment building construction project.

Mayor Justin Elicker said at a news conference on Friday afternoon, the collapse occurred while crews were pouring concrete on a portion of the second floor, and it collapsed onto the first floor and then the ground level.

There were 36 construction workers on site and eight were injured, including two critically. Officials said one of the two workers critically injured has stabilized.

Fire Chief John Alston said at the news conference that of the reported injuries, it included broken bones and three people were partially buried under the rubble.

The under construction building is owned by RMS Companies, Elicker said. OSHA and New Haven police are on scene investigating. Work has been shut down and a stop work order was also issued on Friday, Elicker said.

According to an online listing from B2R Consulting Engineers, the site is part of a new "residential development at Broad and Greyrock." The apartment building is 7 stories tall and has 112 apartments.
