Canal Dock Offers Free Boating Activities At Its Long Wharf Boathouse

NEW HAVEN, CT —Canal Dock Boathouse, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering community engagement through waterfront boating activities, is thrilled to announce its Community Day schedule for 2024. In partnership with the City of New Haven, Canal Dock invites residents and visitors to participate in free boating activities at The Canal Dock Boathouse on Long Wharf.

The Community Days are scheduled for May 19, June 22, July 21, August 3, August 18, and Sept. 21, running from 8 a.m. to noon. This initiative aims to provide diverse recreational opportunities and promote environmental education in an accessible and inclusive manner. All programs for New Haven public school students remain free of charge.

Participants will have the chance to experience various forms of boating, including dragon boating, kayaking, and rowing. Whether paddling together in a dragon boat or learning the art of rowing on land or water using the Concept2 RowErg machine, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The open house event is free for all attendees.

“Community Boating Days provide a great opportunity for anyone to come and enjoy getting in a boat and out on the harbor and see how amazing our waterfront is and experience a different aspect of our city!” said Mitz Carr, Chairperson of Canal Dock Boathouse Inc., “We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to experience the fun of being on the water!”

Participants are encouraged to arrive 20-30 minutes before their chosen activity to ensure a smooth experience. All necessary equipment will be provided, although attendees are encouraged to bring their own Personal Flotation Device (PFD) if available, especially for children, as sizes may be limited.

To make the most of the day, participants are advised to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat, extra clothes or a towel in case they get wet, and medium—to tight-fitting clothing for rowing activities to avoid hazards associated with loose clothing.

The minimum age required to participate is 9, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
