City Opens Cooling Centers Amid Extreme Heat Through Thursday Night

All New Haven libraries and senior centers will serve as cooling centers. And the city's splash pads will remain open and operational.

NEW HAVEN, CT —With the National Weather Service issuing a Heat Advisory forecasting 90+ degree temperatures and high humidity from through Thursday, Mayor Justin Elicker has activated the city's extreme heat protocols.

This means that all city libraries and senior centers will be open as cooling centers during normal business hours. Splash pads at city parks will continue to be operational. And city shelters will extend their hours and capacity, as needed.

A full list of all these locations can be found on the city’s website, with an interactive map of all senior centers, click here, and here are the libraries locations and hours:

"Please stay cool, stay hydrated, limit your time in direct sunlight, avoid strenuous activities," Elicker said in a message to residents. He added: "Check on your loved ones and neighbors, especially at-risk populations such as young children, the elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions."

Elicker said people should call 911 for heat-related emergencies.
