Community Boating Launches Free Rowing Clinics For NHPS Middle, High School Students

At the Canal Dock boathouse on Long Wharf Drive, kids learn rowing technique, boat setup and handling, and safety fundamentals.

NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven Community Boating today launches its series of weeklong sessions offering New Haven Public Schools' middle and high school students the opportunity to learn to row in New Haven Harbor.

The first session began Monday, filled with nearly 40 students, including 20 youth from New Haven’s Leadership, Education. and Athletics in Partnership program.

Three additional sessions will be offered this summer during the weeks of July 28, August 4, and August 18, with spots still available.

"These clinics are an amazing way to introduce young people to the sport of rowing while also helping them build confidence, teamwork, and a connection to the harbor," Mitz Carr, Vice President of New Haven Community Boating, said.

Clinics are free for New Haven Public School students and available to other area youth
for a moderate fee.

Each weeklong clinic takes place at the Canal Dock boathouse on Long Wharf Drive and includes both land-based and on-the-water instruction. Participants will learn rowing technique, boat setup and handling, and safety fundamentals—all designed to build skills and enthusiasm for being active on the water.

This year’s programming is offered in partnership with LEAP and is made possible through
the generous support of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, The United
Way of Greater New Haven, The Carolyn Foundation, and the organization’s growing
