Continuously Improving Hurricane & Flood Preparedness

How residents can prepare for weather events during this storm season.

NOAA’s National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which occurred May 4 – 10, 2025, serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the risk, knowing how to prepare, and knowing what to do to stay safe during a major weather event. The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1, and forecasters predict a very active storm season. Throughout this season, New Haven residents may experience more frequent and heavier flooding, which can lead to impassable roads, property damage, and power outages. To learn how to prepare for and safely weather a flood, residents should utilize the City’s Flood Information Brochure.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) recommends 7 key themes to keep in mind in order to adequately prepare for hurricanes and other major weather events:

  • Know Your Risk – Keep in mind that no property is completely safe from flooding. Flood insurance and flood-proofing are essential to protecting homes and businesses. Current and prospective property owners and residents in New Haven can begin to learn about their flood risk by reading the City’s Know Your Flood Risk Brochure.
  • Prepare Before Hurricane Season – Have necessary supplies stocked in your home and make an evacuation plan. Check out New Haven’s Hurricane Evacuation Zone map to see if your home is located in an evacuation zone.
  • Understand Forecast Information – Pay attention to local weather advisories and forecasts. Residents can sign up for the City’s Emergency Notification System, New Haven Alerts, to receive critical updates and information pertaining to severe weather and other situations.
  • Get Moving When a Storm Threatens – Be ready to follow evacuation orders during a storm event and have protection in place for your property.
  • Stay Protected During Storms – Continue to monitor weather updates and check for alerts during a storm event. Listen to the recommendations of local officials and avoid travel unless ordered to evacuate.
  • Use Caution After Storms – Be aware of flooding and other hazards such as downed trees and powerlines that may still be present after a storm event has ended. All New Haven residents are encouraged to visit the City’s Flood Information Page.
  • Take Action Today – Don’t wait until it’s too late! Protect yourself and your property by adequately preparing for storm season.

For questions or assistance on flood protections, residents can contact City Plan’s flood specialist, Kaelie Moran, at kmoran@newhavenct.gov.
