Hillhouse Boys Track & Field 2022 State Champs To Be Honored By Mayor

The team won the 2022 State Championship ​for Class L schools in the CIAC on ​June 1. And then, on June 6, won the State Open.

NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and other city and school officials will honor the Hillhouse High School Boys Track & Field Team Tuesday at Floyd Little Athletic Center.

The team won the 2022 State Championship for Class L schools in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference June 1. And then, on June 6, won the State Open.

The team of 42 student athletes competed in 19 different events against other high schools from across the state at the two championship meets at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Two team members set new individual state records in the 300-meter hurdles and discus.

Gary Moore Jr., won, and set a new Class L record, for discus, 192-10, and won shot put and javelin

Matthew Gibbs, also set a Class L record for 300 meter hurdles, 37.89.

Ralphael Hawkins won the 200 meters.

In the State Open, again, Moore won all three. He's headed to Baylor University.

And Gibbs won the 300-meter hurdles.

This is the second straight year the Academics have Class L and State Open team titles. The school now has 18 divisional championships and 3 State Open crowns.

A ceremony at the school Tuesday at 2 p.m., will include a short speaking program and a presentation of awards to the student athletes.
