NEW HAVEN, CT — Police are investigating after human remains were discovered Thursday in a wooded area in New Haven.

According to New Haven police, officers responded to the 100 block of Rock Creek Road shortly before 6:45 p.m. after residents reported finding the remains while clearing brush in a wooded area behind the house.

Police said the remains were in an "advanced" state of decay and investigators were unable to determine the person's identity, gender or race.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner took the body into custody and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.
