Launched: Via NHV, City’s New App-Based, On-Demand Transit Service​

The pilot program, providing low-cost, shared, on-demand rides, is one of 9 transit districts in CT with on-demand microtransit services.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Thursday, New Haven launched a new app-based, on-demand transit service pilot program with rides starting at $1.75 and $.85 cent fares for seniors and low-income folks.

City and state officials and TransitTech provider Via held a news briefing, and took a test ride, to celebrate the launch of Via NHV and provide a first look at the city’s new app-based, on-demand transit service.

Elicker, who was unwell and not in attendance at the news event, was quoted as saying in a news release that the pilot is, "Part of the City’s ongoing efforts to expand transit accessibility and options to New Haven residents."

Through the Via NHV app, anyone within the service zone can book an on-demand ride through the app or by calling the Via NHV phone number.

Once a rider books a trip, the Via NHV technology matches riders headed in the same direction into one shared vehicle. During the pilot phase, the service area will be concentrated in neighborhoods on the west side, downtown, and the Fair Haven neighborhood. Riders can use the service to commute to work, shopping centers, healthcare facilities, local transit hubs, family and friends, and more.
