Man, 21, Charged With Murder In 2024 Slaying Of New Haven Teenager: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 21-year-old Waterbury man is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a New Haven teenager, New Haven police said.

On the night of Jan. 29, 2024, cops were called to Newhall Street for the report of gunfire detected by ShotSpotter. While en route, public safety dispatchers received a call that a person had been shot.When cops got there, they found Maleak Sweets, a 16-year-old from New Haven, on the sidewalk suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, he died from his injuries.

Detective Michael Haines of the Major Crimes Unit secured an arrest warrant for Gabriyel Fraser, who was taken into custody Monday and charged with murder. His bond is set at $2 million.
