Man, 39, Shot Inside A Read Street Home During Struggle, Fight: Police

It was just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday when cops found the man suffering from "apparent gunshot wounds" sustained during a fight, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 39-year-old man was shot inside a Read Street home in the early morning hours Sunday during a fight, police said.

According to New Haven police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart, it was just before 12:30 a.m., when cops got a 911 call about a person who'd been shot. When officers got there, they found the man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, police said. "It was reported that there was a fight at the residence with a second person and the victim was shot during the struggle," Bruckhart said. Taken to Yale-New Haven hospital for treatment, his condition is currently stable, police said.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification collected evidence, searched for surveillance footage and spoke with potential witnesses, Bruckhart said, adding ballistic evidence was collected on scene.

"An active investigation is underway and detectives have been following up with several leads," Bruckhart said.

Police are continuing to ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department's anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).

As a result of the investigation, Detective Bleck Joseph was able to secure an arrest warrant for Sebastian Award (DOB 9/18/1988), of New Haven. He was taken into custody today without incident and was charged with the following: Robbery in the 1st Degree, Assault in the 1st Degree, Criminal Possession of a Pistol, Carrying a Pistol without a Permit, and Criminal Attempt at Assault in the 1st Degree. He is currently being held on a $200,000 bond. Regarding the arrest, Chief Jacobson said "Due to excellent work by Sergeant Alvardo and his team, Detective Bleck was able to quickly identify and arrest the suspect. Despite our reduced staffing levels, we are still working hard to reduce violent crime in our city and bring those responsible to justice."

February 21, 2024 – New Haven Police Department makes arrest in Read Street Shooting


On 2/18/2024 at approximately 1224am, the NHPD received a 911 call regarding a person shot on Read Street between Winchester Avenue and Newhall Street. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, a 39 year old male, inside the apartment suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. It was reported that there was a fight at the residence with a second person and the victim was shot during the struggle. He was transported to Yale-New Haven hospital for treatment. His condition is currently stable.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene to collect evidence, search for surveillance footage and speak with potential witnesses. Ballistic evidence was collected on scene.
