It was just before 3 a.m. when cops were called to the 500 block of Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, between Adeline Street and Printer's Lane, on a report of a car accident in which a vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, police said.
New Haven firefighters extinguished the blaze. Once the fire was put out, firefighters discovered a body in the rear seat of the car, police said. New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said Tuesday that the body was that of a woman.
