Man In Wheelchair Dies After Being Hit By Car, ID Released: New Haven Police

Police are investigating the fatal crash, which occurred early Saturday. An ID has been released on Sunday.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 50-year-old New Haven man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a car early Saturday, police said.

At 3:43 a.m., police responded to the 100 block of Dixwell Avenue for a report of a person struck by a vehicle.

Police found the man in the roadway suffering from injuries, police said. New Haven Fire and American Medical Response provided medical aid to the victim, and he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The ID of the victim is Edward Fernandez, 50, of New Haven The driver of the car remained on scene, police said.

The preliminary investigation determined the victim was traveling in a wheelchair south on Dixwell Avenue from Charles Street in the southbound lane near the centerline, police said. He was then struck by the vehicle, which was traveling south on Dixwell Avenue in the same direction.
