Murder Charge Leveled At New Haven Man In Fatal July Stabbing: Police

NEW HAVEN, CT — It was a Saturday afternoon in July when stabbing victim Shamar Gibson, of New Haven, was rushed to the Saint Raphael Hospital ER in a private car. Gibson, 26, who had been stabbed multiple times, was pronounced dead by hospital medical personnel.

Now, police have announced that another New Haven man, Thomas Norfleet, 36, has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing. Court records show he's being held on a $1.5 million bond and is due in court, albeit remotely, records show, on Sept. 24.

Detective Carmelo Rivera, the lead investigator, secured an arrest warrant for Norfleet in the homicide, police said.

It was just minutes after 2 p.m. on July 6 that police responded to the emergency department of the St. Raphael’s campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital, 1450 Chapel St., for the report of a stabbing victim who arrived by private vehicle.

Officers "quickly established a crime scene at the main entrance of the hospital where the vehicle was left," knowing the stabbing happened on Orchard Street but were not sure of the exact location," police said in a news release. The entrance to the Saint Raphael ER is on Orchard Street.

"As officers were securing the scene, a caller reported that there was blood on the walkway and fence of an address in the area of Orchard Street and Henry Street," police said at the time. "Additional officers responded to that location and established another crime scene."

Thursday, in a news briefing set for 11 a.m. at police headquarters, 1 Union Avenue, 3rd floor, New Haven Chief Karl Jacobson will provide information on Norfleet's arrest. Members of Gibson’s family will also be in attendance, police said.
