MYRTLE BEACH, SC — A New Haven police officer was killed after a motorcycle crash in South Carolina early Saturday morning, the New Haven Police Department announced in a press release.

The officer has been identified as Officer Edward Douglas. The motorcycle crash took place around 4:20 a.m. Saturday and no one else was involved in the crash. Officer Douglas dies around 9:25 a.m. Saturday.

"The news of Officer Douglas’ death has shaken New Haven’s 497 member department, of which he was a valuable and highly respected member," Officer David Hartman, public information officer for NHPD, said in the news release. "There is a great emptiness left by Edward’s passing. Edward’s family must know that the outpouring of love they have and will continue to receive will serve as a reminder to them of how much he was loved by all who knew him."
