NEW HAVEN, CT — It was around 6:40 p.m. when cops were called to Sylvan Avenue and Stevens Street for a reported stabbing, according to New Haven police spokesperson officer Christian Bruckhart.

Soon after, cops learned that a stabbing victim arrived at the Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Department, a few blocks from the address they'd just been called to. The victim, a 38-year-old man from New Haven, had injuries which were not life-threatening, police said.

The officers who were on the scene at Sylvan and Stevens were "directed to Chervain St. Louis, 54, of New Haven, who witnesses said was responsible for the stabbing," Bruckhart said.

Offciers "saw blood on him," Bruckhart said, and "during a pat down they found he was armed with a pistol." Police said St. Louis had a valid pistol permit. But, "based on the investigation," St. Louis had been acting erratically in a nearby convenience store, then begin arguing with the victim and a friend who were fixing a moped on the street, Bruckhart said.

"The argument escalated into a fight with St. Louis stabbing the victim, then entering his house and coming back out with a gun at which time initial officers arrived and detained him," Bruckhart said.
