New Haven Mayor, US Rep. DeLauro Honor AmeriCorps
A press conference will be held Tuesday, April 5 at New Haven City Hall to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps.

New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro will join more than 2,800 city and county leaders across the country on Tuesday, April 5 in a day of recognition to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps on challenges faced by the New Haven community. Current VISTAs engaged by the City of New Haven will participate in this press conference as well and describe their motivation to serve and the rewarding nature of their service.
Harp will participate in the Mayor and County Day of Recognition for National Service by issuing a proclamation on April 5. She will be joined at the press conference by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a long-time supporter of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.

The nation’s counties and cities are increasingly turning to national service and volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to address county challenges at a time of fiscal constraint. More than 650 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members serve in New Haven, providing vital support to local residents by volunteering in classrooms and healthcare to those in need, connecting older adults to benefits and companionship and supporting non-profit organizations.
The activities in New Haven are part of a national bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service, thank those who serve and to encourage citizens to give back.

The press conference and issuance of proclamation will take place at New Haven City Hall, located at 165 Church St., at 11 a.m. The effort is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the National Association of Counties, the National League of Cities and Cities of Service.
